# [Bottling books - packaging records](https://help.vineyardelf.com/ksiegi-rozlewu/bottling-books-packaging-records.md)

## What is a bottling book?

A bottling control book is a mandatory record required by regulations governing wine production. It documents every instance of wine being packaged into individual containers (bottles, bag-in-box).

## Why keep a bottling book?

- **Legal requirement** - obligatory for wine producers
- **Stock control** - how much wine was bottled and how much remains
- **Batch tracing** - linking bottles back to their batch labels
- **Loss documentation** - spillage, breakage, samples

## Structure of the book

### Book details
- **Book number** - e.g. BB/2024
- **Year** - accounting year
- **Entity name** - the wine producer
- **Status** - active / closed

### Book entries
Each bottling run is a separate entry containing:

**Inflows:**
- Inflow document number
- Quantity from production (litres)
- Returns from warehouse/production

**Outflows:**
- Dispatch document number
- 0.75 l bottles - number of units
- 1.0 l bottles - number of units
- Other containers (bag-in-box, cartons)
- Losses (breakage, samples)

## Book statuses

- **Active** - entries can be added
- **Closed** - year finalised, read-only

## How to use it in WineryElf

1. **New book**: at the start of the year
2. **Add entries**: with every bottling run
3. **Summary**: stock levels calculated automatically
4. **Close the year**: at the end of the accounting year
