A loss that does not come from a normal operation - wine left in the filter and hoses, a leak, wine poured for tasting - is recorded as its own entry, not scribbled in the margin of a batch card.

**Where:** WineryElf menu → **Vessels** → pick a vessel → **More** → **Loss**

## Recording a loss

1. Enter the volume in litres. Below the field you see the vessel content before and after the loss.
2. Pick a reason: **filtration, bottling, failure / leak, tasting and sampling, evaporation** or **other**. With "other", describe what happened; for the rest the description is optional.
3. Check the event date and save.

## What happens next

The loss reduces the vessel content, appears in the history with its reason and goes onto the **batch card printout** as a separate line in the "Losses" table. Vessel content is calculated as the filled volume minus losses and samples taken, plus top-ups - counted only for the batch currently in the vessel.

## Guard rails

- You cannot record a loss larger than the vessel content. If no volume was given when filling, the vessel capacity is the limit.
- The loss date cannot precede the day the batch entered the vessel, so every loss on the batch card is also visible in the vessel balance.

## Example

You punctured the bottom of a tank and roughly 20 litres ran out. Record a 20 L loss with the reason "failure / leak" and the note "punctured tank bottom". An inspector sees what happened and when, and the vessel balance adds up.
