## What is the Risk Index?

The Risk Index is a single chart that shows the **overall threat level for your vineyard**. Instead of checking frost, powdery mildew and grey mould separately, you see one number from 0 to 100%.

A high Risk Index means you need to take action. A low one means you can rest easy.

## How to read the Risk Index

| Value | Colour | What it means |
|---------|-------|---------------|
| 0-20% | Green | Everything OK, routine monitoring |
| 20-40% | Yellow | Stay alert, keep an eye on forecasts |
| 40-60% | Orange | Elevated risk, consider taking action |
| 60-80% | Red | High risk, act now! |
| 80-100% | Dark red | Critical, immediate response required |

## What goes into the Risk Index?

The system gathers data from several sources and calculates a combined indicator:

### Disease risk
- Powdery mildew (Gubler-Thomas model)
- Downy mildew (Goidanich/EPI model)
- Grey mould (Broome model)

### Frost risk
- Current temperature
- Forecast overnight lows
- Plant growth stage (BBCH)

### Other threats
- Water stress
- Extreme heat
- Strong wind

## What do I see on the dashboard?

The Risk Index widget shows:
- **Large number** - the current level (e.g. 45%)
- **Coloured background** - matches the risk level
- **Arrow** - the trend (rising/falling)
- **Main driver** - what has the biggest impact (e.g. "Powdery mildew: 65%")
- **Mini chart** - the last 24 hours

## Where do I find the details?

Click the widget or go to **Analysis > Risk Index**. You will see:
- **Historical chart** - how the risk has changed over time
- **Forecast** - the projected Risk Index for the coming days
- **Component breakdown** - how much each factor contributes

## How do I set up alerts?

1. Go to **Settings > Alerts > Risk Index**
2. Set a threshold (e.g. 50%)
3. Choose a channel (SMS/email)
4. Save

**Tip:** Set the threshold at 40-50% - this gives you time to react before the situation becomes critical.

## Can I customise the Risk Index?

Yes! Under **Settings > Risk Index** you can:
- **Disable components** - e.g. if you are not concerned about frost in summer
- **Change weights** - e.g. give powdery mildew a higher weight
- **Set your own thresholds** for individual threats

## When is the Risk Index most useful?

- **In the morning** - a quick check of whether anything needs attention
- **Before the weekend** - see whether you can safely go away
- **During high-risk seasons** - spring (frost), summer (disease)
