The NanoSatellites dashboard shows the current condition of your vineyard based on the latest Sentinel-2 pass. The data refreshes automatically once a day.
Map
The main element of the dashboard is a map with an NDVI overlay. The colors mean:
- brown/orange - bare soil or very weak vegetation (NDVI below 0.2)
- yellow/olive - moderate vegetation (0.2-0.4), typical in spring
- light green - good condition (0.4-0.6)
- dark green - lush vegetation (above 0.6)
- grey - pixels masked out by clouds
The overlay is 65% transparent, so the terrain map remains visible underneath.
Parcel table
Below the map is a table with numeric data per parcel:
- Mean NDVI - the average NDVI value for the parcel. The main condition indicator
- Min/Max - the spread of values. A large gap between min and max suggests that part of the parcel is in better shape than the rest
- Coverage - the percentage of cloud-free pixels. With low coverage (below 30%) the data may not be very representative
- Status - a simplified assessment: healthy (above 0.5), moderate (0.3-0.5), stressed (below 0.3)
What to do with this data
The key is to track changes over time rather than looking at a single reading. A 0.1 drop in NDVI over a week on one parcel, while the rest keep growing, is a signal - it is worth checking what is happening there. It could be drought, disease, or frost damage.
During the growing season (spring to early autumn) NDVI should rise from around 0.3-0.4 at the start to 0.6-0.7 at its peak. Sharp drops are always worth verifying in the field.
First reading - example
Our first reading from a vineyard showed NDVI at around 0.35 for both parcels. That is normal for early spring - the vines are only just waking up after winter, buds are opening, and there is little foliage yet. Scene cloud cover was 24%, with pixel coverage of 12-16% (the rest hidden under clouds).
